A few months ago I went to a hair salon in the neighborhood and during my haircut I struck up a nice conversation with my haircutter. He was from Iraq and of course I asked him all about Iraqi food. After an hour of talking about our favorite Middle Eastern dishes, we decided that we would have to cook together one day. Today I received a text from Adam saying “I am at the salon and I have some Bamyeh (okra with tomatoes, onions and lamb) as well as Timman (long grain white rice) for you that I brought from home. Don’t forget to bring empty containers.” I was touched that he would go so far as to share his food with me, and so of course I ran over to the salon with my empty Tupperware. Adam told me that he keeps on thinking about our conversation about Middle Eastern food every time he cooks because it reminds him of the food from home. He also explained that the special name «Timmen/Tmmen » comes from a brand of rice that British Troops brought with them during World War I called « Ten Men. » When I got home I opened the containers and I smiled when I saw that they were still warm from the kitchen, and they tasted delicious! Connecting over food is very Middle Eastern, and sharing it with others in this way is embedded in the culture. Shuk’ren to Adam!
